Thursday 08th May 2008 – To Stilnox or not to Stilnox…

Comments

I have a friend in your same situation - and sadly he's not found anything that works. His most current treatment is a CPAP machine. He's been loosing weight and found that to be helping a little bit. He took Ambien for a while and did experience hallucinations - little people climbing up the mini blind cord. He said that if he devoted a full 8 hours to sleep while on the drug he was OK, but if he knew he didn't have the full 8 hours then his body sort of rejected the medication and stayed awake or had interrupted sleep and that's when the weird stuff happened.

I'm not sure what I would do. Have you tried alternative stuff like hypnosis and acupuncture?

I suggest not. When I can't sleep I actually get out of bed and watch tv or do something for a little while instead of tossing and turning and that often works for me. My daughter uses herbal teas and that helps her.

Sleep tight

I'm sorry, I laughed out loud when you mentioned the woman painting her front door.

The rest is no laughing matter. I would be scared with that many side effects. Especially, since drugs like these haven't been around to REALLY know what they do in the long term. It's scary.

I am just like you when it comes to taking medication. I rarely take it. After I gave birth I was having some serious pains and a nurse told me to take four Advil before bed. To me, that is covering the issue - not helping it. It sounds like that's what this medication would be... covering the issue.

It might be a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway... what else have you tried? Maybe try some tea or other soothing drink before bed. What about taking a bath, massage, reading or some other form of relaxation to get you in the zone? How about exercise or walking? They are worth a shot but it does sound like you've got a lot more going on.

I'm a night owl but I do manage to sleep (my best sleep comes in the morning) but I think I would avoid such a potent drug. Then again, if you're desperate... just be careful.
tricky - people do some crazy shit when taking that. I'm a non sleeper as well and would kill for just one good full nights sleep. I woke up today at 5am and realised I had slept for 5 full hours - and I was happy. It was only because I had to stay up so late to watch Lost.
My husband had a bit of a bad time on those but not sure which was the cause and which the effect. Could you try just taking half the dose?
i suggest not, it looks like too many bad things can happen. You have tried everything else? Maybe see another doctor about it? seems your doctor wasnt really phased as to what would happen if you take them and wasnt really interested :S

Hrrmmm... tricky one! Have you tried Valium? or some other prescription? There are plenty on the market. Stilnox has taken a bad rap ... and rightly so... I'd be careful, especially if you live by yourself and you do something weird or dangerous, there wouldn't be anyone there to wake you up. A radio presenter in Sydney took stilnox and made muffins in her sleep, she was woken to firemen in her apartment putting out a fire in her oven. The smoke alarm didn't even wake her up! That is some scary shit!

Reney do not take stilnex as my mum was on it and and we found her washing tea twoels in the toilet. it needs to be taken off the market.

FD,

I have tried it all. Herbal teas, acupuncture, hypnosis, bite splint in, changed bedrooms, read books, watched TV, listened to meditation breathing CD's you name it I have done it.

Amber,

You nailed it on the head with the comment: "that is covering the issue not helping it"

Ive tried everything, so I just have to deal with it and try to cope with as much sleep as I get. If its 4 hours sleep then so be it, if its 5 hours sleep then great its an hour more than the night before.

I do crazy shit already with no alchohol or drugs in my system so can you just imagine how whacky I woudl be on Stilnox? Christ!!!

I worked in the medical industry for 14 years and as much as I loved the doctors I worked with they ALL tend to write scripts - "Here take this and you will be fine, come back and see me in a week if you dont feel better" and throw you out the door.
I refer to them as "Glorified Prescription Writers"

Ohh Erika!
You have now given me the most perfect excuse to blow up my house and be rescued by firemen! Ohhh man! Im getting all flushed just thinking about it.

I dont do meds too well, I took a Valium once and it fucked with my head.

Ive decided that Stilnox is not the go.
Was your mum seriously washing tea towels in the toilet bowl? Now that is rather alarming!

As for taking this drug off the market I believed it had been due to the "Heath Ledger Incident". Seems I was wrong!

If you try this shit I am going to kick your ass.

Ohh Tee!
I want you to kick my arse!
Bring it on biatch!
In all seriousness, I am not going near the stuff. Check your email I received an interesting and insightful email from a reader and I want you to check it out!
